An Evening with William Beckett by Adam DeAngelis
Sitting with William in the basement of the Crofoot Ballroom in Pontiac, Michigan had a different feeling than what it was like back in the days of The Academy Is… From being on the Vans Warped Tour together and photographing over fifty of their shows- I’ve known the Academy Is… guys for around seven years and witnessed a small band grow into something remarkable. At the last Academy Is… show in New York city, something was different on stage. Different in such a way that it felt like it might be the last show for The Academy Is. Asking him about that night cleared up a lot of suspicions about the chemistry witnessed on stage. He explained that things had been off for a while, nerves were being struck, distance was kept on stage, and it clearly wasn’t what they wanted anymore. As a result, they decided to end things.
After departing ways from his former band, Beckett decided to start his solo career. Though, he soon learned that his label had dropped him. What acted as fuel on the fire, Beckett continued onward with his project. “I don’t have people telling me what’s cool and what’s not cool”, Beckett explains. He now has the chance to be real without limits; he has free reign on his writing and is telling the world how that feels. The invisible hand, so to speak, does not have a grip on him anymore. With the recent debut of his first EP, Walk the Talk, you can hear catchy songs like “Compromising Me” to “You Never Give Up”, a slower song infused with emotions. With two more EPs on the way, Walk the Talk makes a bold statement as he embarks on his solo career.
With an east coast tour currently happening, he plans to go overseas and then onto the west coast of the United States. “Walk the Talk” is the name of his new EP and that is exactly what he is doing.
