The Hell Gate is proud to announce its collaboration with Image Fortress in handling the archive legendary photographer Jim Cummins.  Over 900 music albums from that era, many of which went Gold, Platinum and Diamond, used Jim’s photographs as their album covers. Many of his other photographs of legendary performers of that era were published as magazine covers and in feature articles in magazines such as Newsweek, Rolling Stone and Life Magazine. Two of Jim’s album covers won Album Cover of The Year awards, and Jim’s photograph for the cover of the groundbreaking November, 1967 issue of Newsweek Magazine, devoted to the civil rights issues confronting America during the 1960s, won the National Magazine Award.  Among the many greats he’s photographed are Janis, Jimi, Miles Davis and countless others.

Check out the feature reel of Jim discussing shooting Janis. Janis Joplin – The Photo Autobiographies

We want to thank Image Fortress and especially Bob Pokress for making this happen.

The Photography Of Ester Segretto

FKA Twigs

Ester Segretto has the perfect mix of the right music, the right energy and the technical chops to bring some of the best live photography we’ve seen in a while. The above photo of FKA Twigs slays us. Love that she follows the line of her leg, it’s super elegant and shows off her dancing abilities. View Ester’s gallery. All of Ester’s images are available for licensing here. We are thrilled to be working with her.

While she’s not traveling the world Leila is avidly photographing some pretty heavy hitters in music (Pharrell Williams anyone?) She’s poised to have a month long residency in Iceland this Spring in conjunction with her first book release. More about her residency, personal projects, and more from her archive will be made available in the coming weeks.  Images are available for licensing here. View Leila’s gallery.

Shervin Lainez is old school when it comes to his relationships with musicians. Evidence is in his portraits. This is just a taste of what’s to come from. More please! View gallery here.

Lana Del Rey by Andreas Panopoulos/ The Hell Gate

It’s rare that live photography makes us actually want to run out and buy music, but such is the case with Andreas Panopoulos’s photography. It’s very difficult to do live photography well, and he does it great. View the gallery here.

Thurston Moore’s 38 Favorite Songs

Thurston Moore by Eleonora Collini/ The Hell Gate

Thurston Moore by Eleonora Collini/ The Hell Gate

Gearing up for The Fly magazine awards on Feb. 6th where Thurston Moore will be getting a living legend award, the magazine asked Thurston which are his favorite songs-  He replied with 38 of his favorites. Why 38? We don’t know, Don’t care. While there are no surprises that The Raincoats and Teenage Jesus And The Jerks made the cut, we weren’t expecting to see Alice Cooper on there.  We love to see what inspires musicians, if you do the leg work you almost always discover something mind blowing that opens up all these doors. Full list here and a gallery of our favorite Thurston images here.
