There’s nothing better when a photographer digs into their archives and unearths a treasure. Blur  in London 1991 by Steve Gullick.  All Blur images, and side projects/ solo careers are available for licensing here.

Hey, Jane

Epic new video from Spiritualized, “Hey Jane”, directed by AJ. Rojas. Easily one of the best videos we’ve seen in years.

Love that the first “single” clocks in at over 8 minutes- very Spritualized indeed. New album “Sweet Heart Sweet Light” is out April 16th on Fat Possum.

Steve Gullick, in our humble opinion photographed one of the greatest J Spaceman photos ever- Mt. Etna 2001

Patti Smith is 65

It’s Patti Smith’s birthday today. At 65 she’s solidified herself as one of the most important counter culture icons and continues to thrive. We could go on ad nauseum about her body of work but what we keep noticing and coming back to is how much the camera absolutely adores Patti.  Few would argue that Horses is one of the greatest album covers of all time- and so much of it has to do with Patti’s relationship with Robert Mapplethrope, but with Patti there is more to it… she’s always been very conscious of her image- everything from her hair to her clothes. More importantly she engages the camera- she has this magnetism that compels you to stare at her. It’s almost impossible to find a bad picture of Patti- like seeing her perform there is something that happens when she interacts- she becomes a vessel, a conduit, for something greater, something otherworldly and powerful.

The first time we saw Patti it was a hot, disgusting August day in New York. She read “Piss Factory” and we were covered in goose bumps. She closed her eyes and covered Prince’s “When Doves Cry” and transformed the song and herself.

At 65 Patti shows no signs of slowing down- she’s set to release a new studio album this year- (her 11th)) and is working with Tom Verlaine of Television, which we are extremely excited about.

If ever you want to spend a good New Year’s Eve in New York City forget Times Square-  get yourselves some tickets to see Patti ring in the New Year/ celebrate her birthday at the Bowery Ballroom.

Happy Birthday Patti- you’ve been one of our heroes since we were kids.

Nirvana Season, Thoughts

Steve Gullick/ The Hell Gate- image is copyrighted, not for use without permission

A great deal has been said and done to mark an important anniversary these past few months. Some of this has been beautiful and eloquent, some of this has been routine and manufactured. Rightfully none of this has underplayed the importance, sadness, call it whatever you will of what was & what never could be.

We have had a chance to play a small part in the Nevermind reissues released today. Perhaps part is the wrong word. I wouldn’t dream, or dare to say there is a pride in association here, we have no association. That association is the association of a great photographer.

I guess the pride we have tonight is not association, but inception. A short moment of reassurance in what we try and have hoped to be – faithful to the work, to have an ability to find respect & intelligent usage for that work. We are looking forward to picking up a copy. Young, faithful, proud of our milestones…Guilty as charged.

We have said this before here too– Some of the buzz, the good & the bad, faithful & unfaithful representations of this anniversary will pass. At least the part that the PR people had a hand in. Doesn’t make it any less a meaningful moment.

Another thing we have said here before- This is not just a Nirvana photographer, this is a great photographer. Respect to Steve Gullick- he is the type of photographer we’ve dreamed of working with from the get go.

Gullick & Mercer Recognized

The UK Observer Magazine dedicates their issue today to Emerald City with a great piece by former Spin writer Lauren Spencer.  Covering interviews with Seattle DJs, record labels, AND the Hell Gate’s friend, Lance Mercer.

While we haven’t seen full copy yet, this does feel like a very strong photographic retrospective. We are extremely happy that the work of Steve Gullick & Lance Mercer (known rightly & wrongly for their work with Nirvana and Pearl Jam retrospectively) gets rightful recognition. Gullick’s photo of Nirvana is one of his best portraits while Mercer’s highlights his incredible live photography of Pearl Jam.

This Nirvana season may start to close out with the reissue of Nevermind on September 26th,  but the work of Steve & Lance will not- They were, and continue to be, great photographers.

Last night the Nirvana Nevermind exhibition opened at the Loading Bay Gallery in Brick Lane, East London. The exhibit will only be for 10 days. We won’t be able to see it- if anyone has attended let us know your thoughts. Besides photos, other Nirvana paraphernalia are on display. The Guardian did a nice gallery of photos from the exhibit. Be sure to check back this weekend for more Nirvana coverage coming out of the UK.

Double Take

PJ Harvey by Steve Gullick/ The Hell Gate- image is copyrighted, not for use without permission

No berating of The Hell Gate for old news…  Congratulations to PJ Harvey for her  2nd Mercury Win last night for what is a really good album.

Always one for collaborators, (Nick Cave, Thom Yorke) PJ is no different with photography. Check out the work of Maria Mochnacz early on in PJ’s career  here.

Her most recent collaborator happens to be VII photographer  Seamus Murphy- who did all the amazing press shots and several short films for Let England Shake.

A reminder to us again that music photography is not an island & that great photography is great photography.

Nirvana Season

Spin’s August issue on the stands now is dedicated to the 20th anniversary of Nevermind. It’s well balanced and the recollections span those that were on the scene with Nirvana and those who were heavily influenced by them. If this is a sign of what’s to come leading up to the actual anniversary of Nevermind in September, we are in for some truly great coverage.  The Hell Gate/ Steve Gullick image is on page 62.

New Blog

Nirvana by Steve Gullick/ The Hell Gate- image is copyrighted, not available for use without permission

Welcome to the new Hell Gate blog. The core thinking behind The Hell Gate is to provide a pretty uncompromising immersion into great photography & narratives driven by music & music culture- We hope that translates here.

We’ll be showcasing all new work from Hell Gate photographers as well as giving props to other music photography craftsmen out there – the guys that we all know & love.

We hope that all the backstage, day in the life, “when we were starting out” stories find their way to these pages.

We’ve all heard that music has changed & that music photography ain’t what it used to be. The Hell Gate wants you to visit these pages & question those assumptions. There’s some amazing talent out there shooting today and we are still fortunate enough to be unearthing some tremendous archive images.

As Tom Waits was inducted into the Rock N’ Roll Hall Of Fame last night he said
“They say that I have no hits and I’m difficult to work with, and they say that like it’s a bad thing.”

Amen.
